Going to jump right in on this one. Everyone should create. I mean that in a wider sense than just art. Drawing, painting, writing are all great, but what if you don’t have the artistic gene? You can still create.
When looking to create, most people need motivation so let’s start there. It’s easy to get stuck in the day to day as you get older. Your goals become more long term, you go from wanting to pass a test, to wanting to secure an internship, to buy a house, etc. You become long sighted and forget to appreciate the day. Carpe diem. In this way, creativity gives every day meaning. Maybe you develop a new way to get a task done at work.
We’ve all been there, you get tasked with a project that can be done so much more quickly. Own that feeling and develop your own process. Build a presentation, show it to your boss, make a change. That’s value added not only for your company but for you too. You bridge the gap between your next and current job and show that you can take initiative.
Creating drives the world forward. It was Steve Jobs who said,
“your whole life changes the day you realize that everything you consider life was once made up by people no smarter than you.”
This is the truest quote ever. How did the world exist before the man who invented chairs came to be? It sounds silly but look at how many chairs exist today, the chair is a staple of your life, but before it was that it had to be an idea.
Most of life’s greatest creations are born of necessity. You need to transport items uphill or over a long distance? The wheel. Having trouble finding the right word for a blog? The thesaurus. Need help communicating why someone should hire you? Introducing the résumé.
Artists have made creating seem like it is an arduous task and a process that is hard to replicate. In some instances it is. But what they won’t tell you is that creativity doesn’t have to be sexy if it’s highly functional. Nobody is going to freak out over a pen, but imagine using quills and ink wells to take notes. I bet you’re happy now, huh?
Everyone should create, which is to say everyone should analyze their life and see how they can make it that much better. That’s why we share this world after all. We’re all in this one together.
