The Art of Organizing Your Life

Life can be hectic and, often, keeping our living spaces neat tends to fall to the bottom of our priority list after a long work week. But, the truth is, a cleared space can facilitate the feeling of a cleared mind. Here are a few tips for getting and staying organized.

1. Write Things Down

This is something I’ve adapted throughout both my work and my social life. I implement the old fashioned way of writing down and prioritizing my errands and reminders in a little notebook I always carry with me. Crossing a finished task off a list can be very satisfying and keep you motivated.

This practice also serves a role in my social life, I’m often meeting new people, learning new things I want to later research and making plans- all of which, I like to jot down. In these instances, I’ll whip my phone out and quickly type a few details into a note so I don’t forget anything or miss an opportunity to solidify a connection. It always helps to mention a small detail I’ve remembered from our last conversation or meeting the next time I see them.

2. Create Schedules and Deadlines

No matter where you’re at or what you do in life, scheduling and setting deadlines are a must. Even if it’s just a schedule of errands to run. Keeping yourself in a schedule mindset will keep you more productive. The most important aspect of this bullet is to stick to those schedules! This will reduce clutter and the opportunity for messes and mistakes in your life and it’ll only benefit you in the long run.

3. Don’t Procrastinate

The longer you wait to do something, the more difficult it will be to get it done and the more breaks you take, the longer it will take to get back on track. If you want your life to be less stressful and less demanding, organize what you can as soon as you can.

Putting in that extra effort to get things done as soon as possible will lift the weight of that looming task off of your mind so you can focus on other things. This idea works well with the writing things down and making a schedule to avoid procrastination.

4. Everything Deserves a Home

It’s easy to get lost if you don’t have a home. Keeping your life organized means keeping your things in their apposite places. Make easy-to-access storage spaces for things you use all the time, and don’t let your storage spaces get cluttered. Stay on top of it. You can do this.

5. Declutter Regularly and Keep Only What You Need.

Find time each week to organize and find time at least once every 3 months to do an edit of your belongings. Your stuff will not stay organized on its own; it needs to be reorganized continuously and consistently.

More stuff means more clutter. Clutter and odds and ends tend to pile up easily, especially when you’ve lived in one place for a long time. Go through your “stuff” stuff often and get rid of what you can, when you can!

Hopefully these 5 steps will help those of you who vow to put in the work it takes to live more efficiently in the spaces you occupy and, ultimately, gain a greater sense of mental clarity.
