Loud live music and a runway of attractive human beings in nice garments. I like that ish! In fact, my designated role for this fashion show was to provide the music and open up the show!
I had the pleasure of DJing BET’s “How To Rock Kicks” fashion show last week, and let’s just say I was ridiculously nervous.Leading up to the event I had decided to wear an outfit that was somewhat out of the ordinary for me, it was a bit revealing and required some extra support. Any wrong sudden moves and it would have been a nip slip on site and that’s just something NO ONE can afford. For those of you who are just getting to know me i’m more of a tomboy which explains why I was so self conscious about my outfit, but I’m trying to do the grown and sexy thing being that I’m technically “grown”. That was just one of the reasons I was nervous, but it ended up being more of a minuscule to all the other last minute adjustments I had to get ready for. Livestreams, and television are full of last minute changes, and you have to learn to adapt because the show must go on. That’s something I had to learn the day of the show. I’m usually always calm, and optimistic when things don’t go the way I would hope for them to go, but this day in particular I was on edge. Is there some kind of term for something more extreme than anxiety? Because i would have had to diagnose myself with that. I was buggin! I was wired up and was receiving instructions from the producer of the show, meanwhile I had other people who were working the event giving me instructions, including my manager Michelle. Thank God for Michelle, because if it wasn’t for her background in production I would have had a serious meltdown. Thankfully I kept my composure and the show ended up being dope!
Tracy G of Sway in The Morning and Diggy Simmons kept the crowd entertained. I really admire how Tracy was able to take direction on the fly, because I could hear all her cues in my ear, and let me just keep it real i was just as worried for her, as I was worried for myself. I guess I forgot these two had some live TV experience so of course they made it look light although the direction was heavy though.
The show featured designs by Casey Veggies, Vashtie, Fabolous, Syd The Kid, and Pusha-T . Out of all the shows I have to admit Syd The Kid, Pusha- T, and Vashtie’s shows were all my favorite. It really added to my sensibility of who they are as artist. Even the models they chose to walk in their show was a solid representation of who they actually are.
Overall the show was a success. I learned a lot as far as working on a set of a show for a livestream/live television event goes, and I now have a new found respect for those who know how to adapt to last minute changes and get ish done on the fly! Lastly, I learned that I myself am capable of doing anything i put my mind to, and sometimes it’s okay to be uncomfortable. Being uncomfortable allows you to be comfortable in the long run.
Big up to my boy Hawaii Mike for being the plug on this opportunity and thank you B.E.T for the experience and teaching me how to be a G and to ‘Don’t Panic’!
