Not everyday you get a chance to experience a Master Class taught by one of the greatest hairstylists out there, Tokyo Stylez himself.
Originally from Nebraska, Tokyo has set forth on a never-ending journey of being one of the most well respected hairstylists in the industry! With clientele such as: Kylie Jenner, Naomi Campbell, Karrueche Tran, Lil’ Kim & more under his belt, he has been able to catch the attention of his followers with his unique techniques with hair.

Oct. 25, 2015, Tokyo Stylez brought his ‘Handz on Tour’ to NYC, teaching everyone who attended a few of his different techniques with a focus on lace-frontal installments specifically. Sponsored by Bobbi-Boss Hair, with each lace-frontal provided by Pink Couture Hair, attendees were able to learn how to properly install the frontal with a flawless finish. Precisely detailed, he went over 3 different methods of how to install the frontals: the glue method, double-sided adhesive taping method & the sewing method. Personally, all 3 methods had an amazing finish, so it was hard to decide which I favored most. One technique I definitely noticed was that Tokyo sprayed the frontal with water and plucked a few hairs out for more of a natural look. One main tip he gave was ensuring that the lace is as close to your skin/scalp color as possible!

This class was extremely helpful, especially to those who were having prior difficulties installing lace frontals. After mingling with a few of the attendees, they all agreed they got their monies worth because they walked out with more knowledge and product than they entered with.

After observing the lesson, I got a chance to speak with Tokyo Stylez, who by the way was extremely humble and open, & here is what he had to say:
Kahh Spence: What inspired you to start to do hair?
Tokyo Stylez: “I wasn’t necessarily inspired to do hair, I was sort of forced. My mom was incarcerated from young and I had to help take care of my little sister. So I actually found my love for hair through these times.”
KS: What was your most memorable/enjoyable experience with hair?
TS: “ooooo, that’s a tough one. They were definitely all memorable, so it’s hard to say. I guess I would have to say working with Lil’ Kim for the BET Awards in June.”
KS: What advice do you have for upcoming hairstylists like myself?
TS: “Do you! Forget about what anyone else has to say! And don’t pay attention to what anyone else out there is doing. There will always be a ton of people trying to bring you down but you gotta keep doing you.”
(Tokyo Stylez & Kahh Spence)
Tokyo Stylez is the true definition of ‘it all seems impossible until its done,” because through all his adversities, he was able to persevere and come out stronger than ever which led to his success today. In all, the master class was a great turn out; I truly enjoyed it! Special thank you to Tokyo Stylez & team for the invitation!
