Behentrimonium Methosulfate (BTMS)
I have dry, naturally curly hair. In fact, most natural girls do. If there’s one thing that we rely on the most to combat this problem, its conditioner. Unlike shampoo, conditioner softens and hydrates the hair without stripping it.
When I first became natural I tried out many different (products) conditioners. This is something a lot of people do when they first make the switch to all natural because it’s important to find out what works best for hair. However, it quickly becomes evident that not all conditioners are created equal.
Slip and moisturization are very important factors I look for when choosing a favorite conditioner. I need to be able to finger detangle without snagging or tugging. After doing some extensive research I discovered that the reason why some conditioners work better for me than others and it’s because it contains cationic ingredients.Cationic surfactants send positively charged ions to hair which causes the hair to lie down and as a result reduces tangles and increases slip. One of the key cationic ingredients to all the conditioners I love is Behentrimonium Methosulfate (BMTS).
BTMS is a conditioning agent that provides slip and helps with detangling your hair. It is also an emulsifier, meaning it prevents the separation of water and oils in the recipe. It is synthetically created from modified rapeseed oil(YEP, it’s rapeseed oil ). Now, don’t let the word sulfate in the name scare you. It is very mild and doesn’t contain any harsh solvents.
