You may be guilty of stressing your hair out and you don’t even know you are doing it. We sometimes over manipulate our hair by brushing it, frying it with heat, coloring it, and pulling our hair into tight ponytails. All of these things can cause breakage. However, let’s be honest, manipulation is inevitable but being gentle with your hair can make a huge difference in maintaining its length and health . Listed below are a few tips for low manipulation and length retention.
- Limit the amount of times you brush your hair. Once in the morning and once at night should do the trick. When you are brushing your hair it is best that you don’t brush from the root down because it snags and rips out your hair (especially when wet). Instead brush gently from the ends to the roots. You can also style your hair with your fingers.
- Wear a loose ponytail instead of a tight one or loose braids. Also wear your ponytail in different spots on your head (side, high, and low pony tail) to prevent stress and thinning. If your hair is frizzy try using a serum on your ends to smooth. 3.Your hair will look and feel much better if you limit the amount of times you color it a year. The chemicals in the dye are really harsh and damages the hair shaft.
4. Try tossing your flat iron and blow dryer to the side. Limiting the amount of times you use heat tools is a key player in growing out healthy hair. Overuse can cause split ends, dryness, and breakage. Air drying your hair may be more time consuming but I can promise you that you will see a difference. If you absolutely have to use heat make sure your hair is moisturized and heat protected first and that your tool is not used on the highest heat setting.5. If you are a natural or are just looking to try something different try protective styling using wigs, weaves, braids and twists. This allows your hair to rest and helps with length retention. This is my personal favorite.
Tip: Deep Conditioning your hair weekly will help with the overall health of your hair. This step should be non-negotiable.
