As information (and, unfortunately misinformation) becomes more easily accessible to the masses, It’s become increasingly more important that we do our own research. In recent years I’ve become more interested in wellness at the most basic levels, which has led to my deep interest in water- one of the building blocks of a functional immune system which is the first line of defense against disease. Since I won’t (cuz I don’t wanna) do all the work for you, I want to utilize this post to focus on the basics.
We all know we’re supposed to get in approximately 8 glasses of water a day but most of us don’t know why and we’re lead to believe that all water is created equal. Our bodies need water to hydrate our cells and act as a delivery system for nutrition, electrical impulses and bodily mechanisms. A telltale sign of proper hydration is most evident in our body’s largest organ which plays a key role in our body’s detoxification process by eliminating up to two pounds of waste per day in the form of sweat, oil and dead cell shedding: the skin. When hydrated, our skin is vibrant, plump and gives off a glow. Ya, water can do all that.
pH plays a large role in how i choose my water and should be something you begin to consider as well (if you haven’t already). A normal bodily pH level is considered to be between 7 and 7.4, which is considered slightly alkaline. Below 7, the body begins to slide towards an acidic state. It’s well-known that disease thrives in an acidic body. When our body’s pH is running low, our bodies hold onto heavy metals like mercury and lead as well as bacteria and viruses that would otherwise not thrive. Because our bodies are so complex, we do need acids to maintain a healthy, balanced system which is why only slightly alkalinizing the body is recommended. Sticking to bottled waters with a naturally higher pH can assist in creating a slightly more alkaline bodily environment.
